Fly fishing for wild trout. Stories, tips and tactics from a life on the water.
This is Troutbitten. We are passionate and ambitious anglers committed to fishing . . . because we love it. In truth, we fish because we have to. Because without cold water flowing around us for some time, our spirit dries up a bit, and while standing in a river facing upstream, the water moves through us and restores us, it fills us, it mends us, and then it washes away all of those things that just need to be washed away once in a while. Because working around a stream bend to which we've delivered a thousand casts a dozen times before forges a connection with our own past, creating vivid recall of partners who've shared the same water which no photograph can ever reproduce. Because we have memories deeper and rich with more emotion when our hands are wet and our legs are weak from hours spent hiking a water-filled path against the current. Our best friends are all fishermen. This is Troutbitten.

(From April 9, 2022) One of the greatest attractions to fly fishing can also present one of the biggest barriers. It’s the bugs. The aquatic insects that make up the bulk of a trout’s food base are intriguing, but they’re also somewhat mysterious The advanced angler explores the nuances of these bugs. Some insects are good swimmers and emerge fast, so a presentation outside of a pure dead-drift...

(From February 27, 2022) The strike is the best part of fishing. It’s what we’re all out there waiting for, or rather, what we’re trying to make happen all day long. And the trout eats because we get so many things right. When the fish strikes, we strike back. Short, swift and effective, the hook finds flesh. Then we try to keep the trout buttoned up, and get it to the net. In this podcast epis...

What rod is that?
Hardy Marksman 1004. Current favorite.
I'm super sad I couldn't make it, live in lancaster but have house in Tioga and stop at New Trail to and from the cabin I would have 100% been there but was out of town I'm super bummed I couldn't be there to support trout bitten and my local fly shop precision!
Thanks very much.
Who are you calling old man, old man?
Hey now.
So when I go to adjust it puts the waves in my line
Okay, so I promise that's because you're doing something wrong. It works for thousands of anglers, and it'll work for you. Check out the two articles linked in this video for more details. My guess: you're probably mounting it on less than 4X or you are attaching it wrong. If you get things right, it will NOT affect the line. That's why we love it. Email me if you still have problems. Cheers.
@@Troutbitten okay most appreciated . Got it on a 9” leader or was , but on the upper part of leader. Tippet ring then tippet. 👍🏻
Appreciate the connections with the casting. Great way to explain it. Thanks Dom! Funny outtakes!
Cheers
I use tenkara line cards to hold my leaders. They are thin and weigh next to nothing.
Nice. Glad you found something that works for you..I have a set of four of those cards. For me, a full standard mono rig is a little much to fit neatly on the card. Nice for shorter leaders though. I also found the process of wrapping on such an ultra skinny valley a little tedious, especially with the little tabs on the backside ready to catch my line as I wrap.
Amazing content and complement to the podcast, thanks Troutbitten crew!
Cheers. Thanks very much.
Fantastic conversation. Thank you for sharing all the knowledge and history fellas.
Cheers.
Never thought about set direction. That makes a lot of sense - thank you for providing great information!
Right on.
Fabulous video Dom and Josh. Almost got him there Dom
Cheers
Great video! Cheers!
Thank you
You differentiate between "wet flies" and "nymphs". Aren't these one and the same?
Wets typically have a soft hackle collar and they imitate hatching insects. Nymphs are typically imitating the insects prior to them hatching. I like to swing wets vs dead drifting nymphs. It’s dependent on time of bug life cycle but wets are a niche application of imitating that period of bug life when those bugs are emerging into duns. But you are correct in wondering the difference of the two. It can be tough sometimes
Ah, the lost art of the wet fly. Check out how to swing wets.. There are other ways to present them, jbut ust swinging wets in the traditional way fills a gap in techniques. Cheers..
Good stuff.
Why people try to complicate things for nymph use a indicator or dry dropper when it disappears strike it’s that easy as the same for the dry fly
@@Whitecloud706 Well, there are a lot of different levels to the game, Right? Fishing can be as simple as you want it to be. And using your approach is a great idea. Just strike! Good stuff. But for many of us, we've seen too many misses, and we wonder what we can do to improve the hook up ratio. Incorporating these adjustments shown in the video make a big difference. Adjusting to the situation and making those changes is rewarding, because we see results. That's how we approach fishing. That's Troutbitten. It's fun.
Thanks for showing a lot of casts with all the drifts and sets. Most videos often dont show the act of fishing so that one can connect their how-to words with the action
Right on.
Tried your dorsey indicator today with the materials from your website. How do you get it to not sink as soon as it suspends the flies? No matter how much material is in the rubber band it sinks. Thanks, Nik
Yikes. Something is wrong there, my friend. A little yarn floats a LOT weight. Heck, you could even test that in a glass.
Another great video mate!! Good stuff! I’ve always wanted to try fly fishing! I make fishing videos too and I always love watching yours!! Keep up the awesome job mate!! 🤜🤛💪
Cheers. Thank you. Fun stuff.
Really enjoying those podcasts, lots of great information! I'm new to fly fishing, but catching my first brown trout in a creek close to home where I fished several times with spinning gear and had not caught a trout was all I needed to take on the difficult and sometimes frustrating process of begining and learning. I never tought I would study so much about fishing, but there is so much to learn about fly fishing, that I think I only learned 1% lol. Thanks for the info guys 👍🏻
Cheers
I buy most everything from TTF and Charlie’s Fly Box these days (I’m in CO), both are great but Devin runs an amazing operation: best online customer service performance I’ve EVER experienced. Highly recommend Tactical Fly Fisher
But you didn’t catch a fish with the golden ratio
Nope. It doesn't work. ;-)
What am I missing? Why aren’t these latest podcasts on the Apple podcast. The last thing posted to there is the Grievance episode. I need this for my commute to work! Help 😕

Damn this is fun to tie. I really miss your rain...

The longest intro..... sheesh, good thing we can skip it.
Right on. You can skip it. There's a lot more to fishing than the tactics and the gear. We enjoy the snow, the scenery, the woods, the solitude and everything that goes with it. So we choose to include those things, those feeling, in the video. If you don't like those things about fishing, or if you don't want to see those things today . . . then yes, skip it. Just that easy, right? Watch what you like, and enjoy what you like. We'll do the same. Cheers.
@@Troutbitten yup I just like all those things in real life, like outside. So I get the gear and head on out. I usually don’t watch UA-cam for fun.
thats brilliant, maybe even lifechanging. I was just thinking that when I go fishing for 2 hours I spend more than an hour rigging and less than ana hour fishing
Right on. Efficiency is a BIG key to success out there. It's a big key to just having fun! Here's the category on the website: troutbitten.com/tag/efficiency/ Cheers.
there are no "secrets" , unless you have access to completely private water. I've fished my entire life, and rarely lived in one place long enough to get intimately familiar with less accessible places. Having lived now for a "long" time in SC Pa, I've realized there are SO MANY people here that there are no secret places. There is no real "spot burning" ... tomorrow someone will be fishing where you caught your fish today. That's just the truth. The vast majority of us who love to fish also have real lives, jobs in which others depend on us, families, homes, etc and realistically are not able to spend days and days per week seeking out "secret" spots...
Thanks for your comment. If you listen to the podcast, you'll understand our point. Spot burning most certainly is a problem. It does exist, and it sucks. Mentioning stream names publicly isn't necessary. And those who spend much time on the water quickly understand why. You may not think it matters. You may not care about any "secret" spots. That's cool. But the reason we don't spot burn is out of respect for other people. It's not about you. It's about the rest of the community. Every piece of river is someone's favorite, special spot. Naming that spot and drawing more attention to is just really bad form. Again, if you listen. It's all in there. Here's an article with the same points: troutbitten.com/2017/09/26/respect-spots-man-fishermans-thoughts-friendship-spot-burning/ As far as secrets . . . well, those most certainly exist too. "There are two kinds of secret places: one’s that are truly tucked away somewhere unknown, and ones that lie right underneath a fisherman’s nose. " Here's the article: troutbitten.com/2016/11/16/the-secret/ Cheers.
@@Troutbitten that's cool... Everyone who has stumbled upon, or worked for and found a good spot obviously has some desire to hold it close to their own vest.... I have yet to find any place in York, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lanc, Mifflin, Juniata, or Adams counties which didn't already have boot tracks. Other places and other times? absolutely. Not here.
@@JoelSzymczyk Of course everywhere has boot tracks. Of course there are no untouched pieces of river. What I mean by secrets is detailed here, in this article: troutbitten.com/2016/11/16/the-secret/ Here's an excerpt: "There are two kinds of secret places: one’s that are truly tucked away somewhere unknown, and ones that lie right underneath a fisherman’s nose. This place harbors a little of both. Nothing that’s written down in magazines and placed on a list for “destination fishing” can fairly be called a secret. And yet, within these rivers, a deeper realm exists than the traveling angler cannot find. A good river requires your friendship before it reveals its best. You get to know it first. So even blue ribbon water has its guarded locations. There are secret spots that lie open, in plain view, often walked through or passed by for the next deep gut or undercut bank. They are the best-kept secrets of a popular river and worth protecting, just as much as the off-the-grid freestoner that holds a nice population of wild trout, and no one else seems to know about . . ." And why those secrets matter, and why we don't spot burn is in the podcast discussion above and in this article: troutbitten.com/2017/09/26/respect-spots-man-fishermans-thoughts-friendship-spot-burning/ If you give those resources a look and a listen, I think you might see things a little differently, or at least understand a different perspective about secrets and spot burning. Cheers.
@@Troutbitten I do get it and I don't mean to be argumentive. I know a few square-foot spots minutes from my home in Carlisle where people ignore and walk right by, but hold good fish. If it's defined as a personal thing, I totally understand. I know I'm not the only one who knows the spots. I'm a relative newcomer to the area but I've learned to be observant. It's a struggle... I've been blessed or cursed to live in some rather remote places thanks to Uncle Sam. I've had some astoundingly good fishing in places with NO boot tracks- spot burned wouldn't matter because the reality is not many people would ever get there. This is the opposite- there are maybe "micro-secrets" but someone will be there tomorrow, or was there yesterday. I guess it's a matter of perspective.
if you fish and you post on social media about it you are the problem.
We've addresses that sentiment as well. troutbitten.com/2024/05/29/do-we-really-want-fly-fishing-to-grow/
My theory on spot burning is that it can open up the crowded spots that i would love to fish if only there weren't so crowded. Let's be honest. If it takes more than 15 minutes to walk to your spot. Then you could post GPS locations on google Maps, and 95% of people would still never go to them. If they are willing to walk, then im willing to "burn" the spot.
Yikes. That sounds rough. But unless I misunderstand you, then the logic doesn't hold either. If only 5 percent of people will go to these places after you spot burn them, how does that open up any water?
@Troutbitten because I have no problem giving away the easy to get spots either, and there are so many good places to fish.
I'm still confused by your point. But I do have a problem with naming what you call the "easy spots." I don't think that's for any of us to decide, what is easy or well known enough to name it. How could we possibly determine that objectively? "The reason we don't spot burn is out of respect for other people. It's not about you. It's about the rest of the community. Every piece of river is someone's favorite, special spot. Naming that spot and drawing more attention to is just really bad form." troutbitten.com/2022/03/27/podcast-secrets-and-spot-burning-s3-ep1/
I'm just listening to this now. Very insightful and helpful, as always. Yesterday I found myself switching from a regular tightline to a tightline to an indicator because the lighting conditions were such that I couldn't see my sighter until it was across from me. The indicator was easier to pick up when it entered the water.
Good stuff
been using 2X adams mono to 4x indicator mono and its my favorite so far with the rod i have. the white line often helps me find my sighter. i tried running rio 4x indicator mono the whole way, but its hard to handle. the 2X adams is similar to 6lb maxima.
Cool. I agree, all the bi color stuff is way too limp for me to make a full leader out of it. And if you do any stripping or streamer work, it loses its composure pretty quickly.
So many great ideas and tips here! If you haven't already done so, I suggest looking into the Broder Net Clip (google it). Game changer for me. I now carry my net on this clip just behind my wading staff (attached your style!). Thanks for this and all your other super helpful content!
Thanks!
Even The New Fisher shot a episode at the DeBruce club. A club they stock over wild, and feed them. Thanks for the opinions guys.
That's what I mean by somuch of the industry not only accepting it but fostering the club environments.
@@Troutbitten I guess its easier to make a video when fishing overeager pellet heads. The thing is, they know they are doing it and of course didnt disclose they were fishing private water. I could rant on this for days.
@@Jon626 There are MANY other videos from MANY others channels that do the same thing. And many of the pictures you see in the most popular magazines . . . same thing. Again, it's far more prevalent than most people realize. And my argument is those videos, those magazines, etc, set the expectations and trends in the industry. Not good. Not fair. Time for change. Cheers.
Hello Dom, I have some questions but this is the other hobby you have, I have seen the guitars you use on the wall and you have explained your a musician, what amp do you play though and what type of music you like playing?? thank you
Hi there. I played acoustic and electric guitar, saxophone, harmonica and vocals. Full time gigs for 16 years. Ha. That was too long. Austin now has my last amp, a modded Blues Junior, good for small clubs.
Terrific! Great points and I especially enjoyed hearing Tom R speaking off the cuff. Thanks!
Cheers
Thanks!
Many thanks to you!
I had the pleasure of meeting Tom in person at a fly fishing expo in the Twin Cities a couple of years ago. He was as kind and gracious in person as he appears in all his videos. Great job having him as a guest!
Right on.
And then you have Trout Unlimited chapters that are just glorified stocking clubs.
Some do this. Yes. But not all.
The PA Fish and Boat Commission needs to get serious about protecting and promoting Brook Trout. Limiting stocking is a key step in that direction.
That would be good. Stop stocking over wild trout, native or not.
We don't talk about the sack.:. Hehehe
...
Nice podcast guys, I really enjoyed the topic of debate. Keep on keeping it classy fellas!

Even in the heart of PA, centre county, some of the really good limestoners, Elk and parts of Penn's Creek are private club water. Anglers who need to fish private water and can't get it done on public water are weak.
...
Love this idea of the live podcast. stuck in a hotel in Saskatoon watching this thinking about my next trout venture. 15 days in MT this year already and 5 days booked on the Bow in Canada. This and Tom’s podcast keep me super excited. Where is the beer?
Ha. Beer was afterward.
Tom Rosenbauer...Hey now!!
Hey now
Thanks Dom, a really helpful video. What I appreciate most in your approach is that it is not predicted of conforming to competition rules, like so many videos technique lessons. Your videos seem to be designed for the recreational fly fisher. I was wondering about your thoughts on tippet diameter. I can understand needing to use a thin tippet for getting a small fly ( 18-24) down quickly when you really don't have the option of tying the fly of adding weight, other than to the fly itself, but if I'm using a drop shot system and my flies are very lightly weighted, does it really matter if use 6x rather than 4x ? Does the extra diameter really affect the drift that much ? Thanks very much !! Please keep up the good work !
Thanks. Here's an article for you about some of that: troutbitten.com/2020/01/26/why-you-may-not-need-the-crutch-of-6x-and-smaller-tippets/ But to your point, it hardly matters much, no. As long as the fly has some ability to move and flex around, It'll catch trout just as well. I strongly believe that trout are NOT tippet shy. They are drag shy. They don't care if they see your tippet.
Thanks Domenic, I really appreciate your videos. I've using a micro set up, and thin tippet (5x), but for the reasons you've discussed, I'm going to set up a mono system based on your formula and give it a try. One question I have regards tippet size, I've been using smaller diameter at the cost of fish control. What is your feeling about tippet size and trout takes ? I'm really interested to hear your thought ! Thanks much.
Good stuff. I would strongly recommend fishing the Standard build first. It's so much more versatile and fun to cast. The micro rig is a terrible way to start tight lining, in my opinion, but it has it's place, once you have tight lining skills. Not sure what you mean about tippet size and trout takes. I guess it doesn't matter to me. I just set the hook fast but not far, just tighten up quickly, and don't break off fish. We can do that with 2x or 8x, right?
Thanks very much, I was referring to whether you thought there was much difference in leader visibility (from the fish's perspective ) when you go from 6x to 4x, do you feel like you're getting the same number of strikes ? Like you, I drink a lot of water when I'm on the river and was wondering if you had tried the Katadyne BeFree water purifier collapsible bottle, it folds up to fit in any fly vest pocket and you can fill up to one liter. If you haven't tried it you might want to check it out. I've used one for three years now and it works perfectly, and it sure solves the problem of having enough clean, cold water and not feeling like a pack horse. I really enjoy your work, thank you !
Definitely the best podcast out there!
Very cool. Thanks.
Fell in love with ur knowledge friends. Trout fishing is another love of mine. People just dont understand how it affects my life and how it could greatly impact theirs. Nice to know other people feel the same ❤
